In 1974, the National Autistic Society opened the Radlett Lodge School in Hertfordshire to meet the growing need for specialised education for autistic children in the area.
The school was established by Katie Thomas, an experienced teacher who had worked with autistic children in Canada and the UK. The school was initially funded by Government grants and donations from the public.
Magpie, a children's programme at the time, also raised money for the school to buy furniture.
