I Exist and the Autism Act 2009

Thanks to the I Exist campaign led by the National Autistic Society and supported by other organisations, the Autism Act 2009 was introduced to the House of Commons by the late MP Dame Cheryl Gillan and the House of Lords by Baroness Pitkeathley.

The Act states that there must be a Government strategy for improving services for autistic adults, underpinned by legally binding guidance for councils in England. Similar strategies have been enacted in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The I Exist campaign was the second part of the Think Differently About Autism campaign. This report shared the experiences of autistic adults and their families in England and outlined the changes needed to transform their lives.
