Special occasions create educational opportunities at Sybil Elgar School
Published on 02 August 2023
The celebrations of different occasions in our school have played an instrumental role in presenting a range of educational opportunities. In the light of autism-specific education, here's a glimpse of our recent special events.
Summer Social
We celebrated our Graduates and Cup Winners achievements at our Summer Social on Saturday 29th July. The venue was Havelock Road in Southall where we enjoyed good company, good food and good music. Our theme for this year was ‘Pirates’ chosen by our student committees from Havelock and Woodlands. We are privileged to have had the Mayor of Ealing Cllr. Hitesh Tailor presenting the certificates and we had a fantastic time with students and parents from past to present, ‘Shiver me timbers!’
Celebrating diversity and unity: World Music Day insights
On 'World Music Day', our school focused on introducing diverse music genres from across the globe. Students explored different musical instruments, rhythms, and cultural music history, engaging in activities from simple drumming to even composing their own songs. Music education took center stage, helping students connect to their emotions through the enjoyable medium of music.
How can autistic students take part in yoga?
International Yoga Day at our school was an opportunity to integrate physical activity with emotional and mental balance. Classes were designed to suit all abilities, focusing on basic postures, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques. The event aimed to enhance motor skills, concentration, and promote inner peace amongst students.
How is creativity encouraged in our autistic pupils and students?
During 'Children's Art Week' and 'DT Day' (Design & Technology Day), students explored their creative and problem-solving skills. These events presented an array of opportunities from painting and sculpture to digital design and engineering tasks in the park. Creativity offers an unique way of problem-solving, with a new perspective and developing a strong sense of achievement in our students.
How we promote reading habits in our autistic pupils and students
'Booknic Day' saw the schoolyard transform into a large, open-air library, where students could pick any book and read outdoors. This approach nurtured a love for reading, vocabulary enhancement, and comprehension skills. It also helped students understand emotions, characters, and plots, aiding in their emotional development.
Football & Maths: A Dynamic Fusion During Sports Week
During Sports Week, our autistic students delve into football, learning both athletic skills and the importance of adhering to game rules. The sport also introduces cross-curricular maths, with activities centered on counting, calculating distances, and strategisin. It's a dynamic blend of physical activity, social interaction, and academic reinforcement. It was a lot of fun and everyone seemed pleased with their participation.
A closing note from our therapy team...
In this week's TDT newsletter we delve into how incorporating the seven senses - sight, sound, taste, smell, touch, and movement, can stimulate cognitive development, enhance motor skills, and contribute to overall well-being. It's more than just fun, it's about fostering a complete understanding of our interactions with the world around us. Join us as we explain why these sensory experiences are crucial, and how parents and educators can integrate them into everyday activities for the children in their care.
More information about sensory differences and sensory challenges for autistic pupils can be found on the NAS web page.
Have a wonderful summer holiday. See you all in September!
