Creating buzz: Sybil Elgar School joins bumblebee-friendly schools scheme
Published on 09 May 2024
Sybil Elgar School is participating in the Bumblebee-friendly Schools scheme with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, which introduces students, staff, and the wider school community to bumblebees. All children in Havelock Road and Woodlands have been learning about bumblebees and have been encouraged through presentations to take positive actions that will make our school a better place for bumblebees and other wild pollinators. Our pupils and students are working with passion to complete a set of bumblebee-friendly actions and provide evidence to earn Bumblebee-friendly Schools accreditation.
Cultivating passion: students lead pollinator garden project
Year 10 students and their teacher Nasira designed a green space in our outdoor area specifically set aside for bumblebee-friendly flowers. In the autumn, children and staff planted flower bulbs to attract bumblebees, and it didn't take long for them to enjoy the results of their hard work. Now, all children enjoy conducting surveys to count the bumblebees visiting our outdoor space and are grateful that bumblebees visited the Year 10 classroom.
Superbloom 2024: staff learn how bumblebees shape ecosystems
As part of Superbloom 2024 with Historic Royal Palaces, most staff at S school participated in bumblebee training with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and learned that through pollination, bumblebees and other pollinators ensure the production and availability of some of our most nutritious fruits and vegetables, underpinning entire natural ecosystems. In the last century, changes in land management have led to a significant decline in bumblebee numbers, with two species of bumblebee becoming extinct in the UK. We are proud to take part in raising awareness for these important creatures.
