Season of celebration: a term of learning, diversity, and joy at Sybil Elgar School
Published on 02 April 2024
We've had an incredibly busy term here, filled with celebrations and learning that span from St. Valentine's Day to World Book Day, Science Week, World Autism Awareness Week, the vibrant festival of Holi, our joyful Easter parade, and the supportive activities of Red Nose Day. Each event brought its own unique spirit, enriching our school's culture and bringing smiles to everyone's faces.
Cultural celebrations as learning gateways for autistic individuals
- Valentine's Day: The students learned about St. Valentine and made their own Valentine's Day cards to take home.
- World Book Day: Students and staff dressed as their favorite characters from books, which provided an exciting learning opportunity outside of the classroom.
- Science Week: The children focused on developing their knowledge of natural sciences, chemistry, biology, geology, astronomy, and physics.
- World Autism Awareness Week: A film crew from the NAS visited the school to celebrate World Autism Awareness Week, providing an opportunity for the children to learn and interact with the visitors.
- Holi: The festival of color, love, and Spring was celebrated, providing a colorful and messy learning opportunity.
- Easter Parade: The students worked with the Design & Technology Teacher to design Easter bonnets, baskets, and cards, and then participated in a parade, which was a joyful and colorful learning experience.
- Red Nose Day: Students and staff joined in the festivities by wearing red tops and jeans, participating in baking activities and dance challenges to raise funds for children experiencing poverty in the UK and worldwide.
Looking ahead...
We'll have an inset day on Monday, 15th April, giving our staff a chance to engage in professional development and planning for the term ahead. Our pupils and students will then return on Tuesday, 16th April, ready to dive back into their learning journey with fresh enthusiasm.
We're also planning a coffee morning at Havelock Road on Wednesday, 24th April. It's a wonderful opportunity for parents and carers to come together, share experiences, and enjoy each other's company. We truly value these moments of community connection and look forward to welcoming you.
