Sell for charity
Selling something for charity can be one of the easiest ways to fundraise. There are lots of ways to raise money through sales in your community or from home. Consider what you have to sell and how best to sell it.
Join Team AutismIf you bake, sell cakes! If you have a crafty talent, could you sell your creations? If you are well connected in your community, could hold a small sale at an upcoming local event? Or if you’re a fan of eBay, an online sale is a perfect way to raise money.
Sales with a percentage of proceeds to the National Autistic Society may require a Commercial Participation agreement. Please see point four below for more information.
A step-by-step guide to selling for charity
-
Pick a busy period in a prime position with good footfall or a reputable site for selling. Consider selling during another big event or a particularly relevant time to guarantee interest. Ask others to volunteer their goods or time and establish a fair price system ahead of the activity to save time and to help inform your fundraising target.
-
Offer refreshments, sweetie bags, till top gifts or recipe cards for an extra donation. Could you run another easy fundraising activity like a sweepstake, a raffle or guess the weight of a giveaway?
-
Decide on the most suitable platform, do your research and choose a reputable one. The most popular sites include eBay, Etsy and Vinted to name a few. If you do decide to use eBay, check our our National Autistic eBay selling page. Check out our guide to online giving to decide what works best for you. Read the small print to be sure you've considered any selling fees.
-
If you’re selling goods or services as a business, sole trader or even an Etsy or Facebook seller and intend to donate a percentage of proceeds to the charity, you’re legally required to have a Commercial Participator agreement. Please contact community.fundraising@nas.org.uk for more information or register with Work For Good.
-
Use social media, download our posters and ask the venue or workplace to promote your activity. Be confident about what the National Autistic Society does and where your money goes.
Be sure to thank everyone who helped you by donating to the event, volunteering or purchasing goods. If you can do this through a channel with a link to a donation page, it could spark extra donations.
Keep it safe and legal
Food hygiene certificates are not a legal requirement but if you are handling food, please do it safely. Consider dietary requirements and allergies and use clear labels. Please visit www.food.gov.uk and search catering for charity. If you are handling cash, please read our Staying Safe and legal link below.
