National Autistic Society Cymru writes to Welsh Government over concerns regarding school transport.
The start of school term can be a stressful period for both parents and children. But for autistic children, this can be even more so. That's why it is important that any changes are communicated in advance to both parents and autistic children.
We have had many parents in Wales contact us about last-minute notifications of changes to school transport for their children, in some cases only finding out about these changes the Friday before the start of school.
Autistic children often depend on established routines, predictable environments, and trusted relationships with drivers and escorts in order to travel to school safely and with minimal distress. Sudden alterations to transport provision, communicated at the last minute, means that families can lack the time necessary to prepare their children, liaise with schools, or make alternative arrangements.
We have therefore taken the decision to write the Welsh Government about this issue, asking that it updates its guidance to local authorities to ensure that changes to any transport arrangements are confirmed and communicated to parents and children well in advance of term start dates.
You can read our letter here and we will of course publish any response we receive.
