Holidays – guide for holiday companies
Autism is much more common than most people think. There are more than 700,000 autistic people in the UK – that is atleast one in 100.
This guide explains what you can do to help your autistic customers and their families enjoy a successful holiday or trip.
About autism
Autism is a lifelong disability which affects how people communicate and interact with the world. All autistic people have difficulties with communication and social interaction. Many autistic people have sensory issues with noise, smells and bright lights, which can be painful and distressing. They can experience intense anxiety and extreme unease around unexpected change.
If you work in the holiday industry, the following resources will help you to understand the needs of your autistic customers:
- Visit out What is autism page
- Watch our Too Much Information film
Asking about special requirements
Ask your customers if they have any special requirements. Autistic people may:
- need to wear ear defenders to block out noise
- have dietary requirements
- need to take items of comfort with them to reduce anxiety.
Ask your customers to complete a form or send an email detailing these needs.
Airports
Many airports and airlines provide assistance to autistic people and their families and you can tell your autistic customers about this. For instance:
- Manchester Airport provides special assistance and give autistic passengers a lanyard to wear as a discreet way of showing airport staff that they may need help.
- London Gatwick Airport offers an autism friendly visual guide. This airport is also an autism friendly award holder.
