Main information

Type of service: Day schools, Schools

Howford Unit is situated in Howford School for primary aged pupils with moderate learning difficulties (MLD). It provides education for pupils who have autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and additional learning difficulties. However, these learning difficulties should not be so severe as to preclude them from accessing an MLD curriculum, as functional integration within the school is targeted for all pupils. The unit is staffed by a core team of teachers and auxiliaries, who along with case psychologists, music therapist, speech and language therapist and art and gym specialists, work together as a multi-disciplinary team to most effectively meet the needs of the pupils. The unit has not adopted anyone single approach in its methodology, but has an eclectic approach facilitating a selection of the most appropriate means of meeting the needs of each pupil - within the context of an elaborated 5 to 14 Curriculum. Volunteers to work with the pupils may be accepted.
