The Joy Lane Autism Provision is for pupils who have a statement of special educational needs in which autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been clearly identified as the primary need. Secondary diagnosis may include Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and specific learning difficulties. The unit does not take pupils with severe learning difficulties (SLD) or extreme challenging behaviour. The pupils are divided into 3 class groups. Each class has a teacher and Teaching Assistant (TA). There is supported integration into the mainstream primary school on site. The Oysters Autism Provision at Joy Lane Primary School in Whitstable Kent currently accommodates 28 children in three classes. Each class has a teacher and two teaching assistants. The teacher:pupil ratio is 3:28 the adult:pupil ratio is 9:28.
