Autism and continence

This course focuses on the common toileting difficulties in autistic children.

About the training

The course aims to explore why autistic children may find learning to use the toilet difficult, as well as more specific continence issues. The session will focus on the need for detailed preparation, examining other autism-related behaviour, such as only using certain toilets, smearing and response to sensory differences.

The course has been written by Dr Eve Fleming, Community Paediatrician and Lorraine MacAlister, a National Autistic Society Autism Training Consultant. Eve and Lorraine have both published articles in Nursing Times about autism and are authors of the book Toilet Training and the Autism Spectrum: A Guide for Professionals.

This course is aimed at those working with autistic children who are experiencing difficulties with any aspect of toileting across a variety of settings. It is particularly relevant for continence advisers, nursing teams and school-based staff or advisers.

Our interactive training options provide delegates with access to our courses in a learner friendly and accessible way. Your training will be delivered by one of our experienced and knowledgeable training consultants, using a combination of PowerPoint presentation, videos and discussion to support learning. We schedule regular breaks into all our sessions.

Our live online courses are delivered using Microsoft Teams. Delegates will be sent joining links and handouts prior to the course. We have approximately 15 delegates on each group, and we try to be sensitive to individual adjustments that people may need, including cameras being optional and using the chat box for interactions.

Our face-to-face courses are delivered at a venue of your choosing. Handouts will be provided at the beginning of the course. We have approximately 25 delegates on each group.

Training times

Our live online course is generally run across two days, 9.30am to 1pm across both days with regular breaks. However, we can liaise with you to offer a range of times that would suit your setting.

Our face-to-face course is run in one day, from 9.30 to 16.00, including breaks and lunchtime.
