Hartlepool Day Service

Main information

Service categories: Social care and residential services

Hartlepool Day Service is based at the Centre for Independent Living (CIL). The building is situated on Burbank Street which is the south side of the town. The building has a magnificent view of the historic headland and North Sea.The CIL was developed following several public consultations with local people, parents/carers, people who use our service and professionals. The building is operated by Hartlepool Borough Council.

Tailored Environment:

  • Consultation-Informed Design: The service's environment, including decor and layout, was created based on the direct input of those who would be using the service, along with guidance from autism and dementia specialists. This was to ensure we had a supportive, calming and sensory-friendly atmosphere.
  • Focus on Sensory Needs: The environment is designed to accommodate sensory sensitivities that are common in individuals with autism. We took guidance and considerations with elements like lighting, sound, colours, and other sensory experiences that can either stimulate or soothe individuals.

Core Mission and Approach:

  • Health and Well-being: Our service supports people to enhance the health and well-being of individuals by promoting active participation in a variety of internal and external activities.
  • Sensory and Multisensory Experiences: The service is designed to engage individuals through sensory experiences across sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. These multisensory activities are carefully tailored to be both therapeutic and enjoyable, ensuring that individuals on the autism spectrum can fully participate in ways that align with their specific needs and preferences.
  • Our values are the principles that we as an organisation live and work by. They are the moral and professional standards that govern our approach to delivering services, as well as how we treat each other and the people we encounter through our work.
  • The values act as the glue that holds us together and ensures that we are all pulling in the same direction. By sharing our values we send a message to our employees and residents about what Hartlepool Borough Council is all about.
  • Which is caring, giving a sense of support and nurturing through the different services that we can offer. Giving the people the tools to progress, they are more likely to feel empowered by the support we can offer. We are Creative, Aspiration, Respectful, Inclusive, Nurturing, Genuine.

Accreditation and Quality Assurance:

  • NAS Accreditation: Our service has had the autism accreditation since 2012 and have recently achieved Advance status 2024. This accreditation is a recognition of the quality and standards of care provided to individuals with autism.
  • Regular Inspections: Our service undergoes rigorous inspections every three years, ensuring ongoing improvement and adherence to best practices in autism care.
  • Ongoing Commitment: Our service is committed to maintaining a high standard of care and continuously adapting to the needs of the individuals it supports. We look at enhancing the service, whether through expanding activities, incorporating new technologies, or further optimising the sensory-friendly environment.
