Newcastle Social Inclusion Project
Main information
Type of service: Play and leisure, Befriending/mentoring, Social groups
The Social Inclusion Project (SIP) runs for 8-12 year olds on a Tuesday evening and 13-16 year olds on a Thursday evening and is based at Thomas Bewick School 17:30-19:30 for Newcastle children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In the school summer holidays both groups run fortnightly through the day. There is a £5 sub per session.
By using young volunteer 'Buddies' the aim of the SIP is to enable children on the autism spectrum to gain access to age-appropriate inclusive activities within their local community which previously they may not have felt able to access. This project enables them to do so within a safe and fully supported environment in order to increase confidence, social, interpersonal, life and a variety of other skills, and access community links.
