The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is an approach that teaches early communication skills using pictures rather than words or signing. With PECS, children and adults are taught to exchange pictures for something they want. For example if they want a drink, they will give a picture of a drink to someone who immediately responds with the requested item. This 'exchange' format develops skills critical to communication such as social approach, interacting with another person and spontaneity versus prompt dependency. The Pyramid Approach to education develops educational environments for children and adults with autism, and other learning and communication difficulties. Pyramid Educational Consultants UK, the only provider of PECS in the United Kingdom (UK), offers training, customised consultancy and resources to support PECS and the Pyramid Approach. We hold regular Level 1 PECS courses around the UK. We also provide Level 2 PECS courses and Pyramid Approach training to help develop communication skills, manage challenging behaviours and more. All of our courses are appropriate for family members as well as professionals. Our consultants can also provide training and support in homes or on-site in schools and organisations.
