We’re called The Psychology Centre, after our two founders Dr Lorna Showell and Dr Mia Harrison, who are both Clinical Psychologists. They had worked for many years in NHS, Local Authority and voluntary organisations…having been so fortunate to have worked with many different services across the country they realised that maybe things could be differently, they heard how frustrated services, families and professionals were and the psychology centre was born.
Our aim is to provide a service that explores the differences and difficulties experienced by families and young people by conducting in-depth holistic assessments considering how and why a young person is facing challenges. An in-depth holistic assessment is what we pride ourselves on, we feel so privileged to have met so many people that have shared their stories with us, this means that we have further developed our skills to always consider an individual first and what is helpful for them to thrive.
An assessment is a snapshot of a moment in time, that considers all areas of an individual’s life, from their early development, currently and across the environments they encounter day to day. Our team of dedicated and experienced clinicians are qualified and knowledgeable across areas of neurodiversity, Autism, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health, Attachment and Trauma. This means that we can consider if a diagnosis is a way of understanding experiences, but also if not, well, what does that mean and what would be helpful. Our assessments adhere to NICE guidelines, with the availability of a multi-disciplinary team; including Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Psychology.
