Our new e-learning module exploring the mental health experiences of autistic teenagers
Published on 28 February 2024
We are delighted to launch our new e-learning module, A Guide to the Mental Health Experiences of Autistic Teenagers, which is aimed at professionals and parents who are supporting autistic young people aged from 13 to 18 years old.
The aim of the module is to increase understanding of autistic young people’s experiences, including their autistic identity, their mental health experiences, and exploring proactive strategies to support them.
Autistic people have been at the heart of the development of the module, through content development and writing, filming, reviews and recommendations. We have also worked with clinicians experienced in autistic mental health experiences and diagnosis, alongside other professionals who work directly with autistic young people.
The module has three parts, covering:
- Understanding autistic identity
- Understanding the mental health experiences of autistic teenagers
- Proactive support strategies
Rachel Townson, Autistic adult, Online Training and Development Manager at the National Autistic Society, said:
“We are excited to finally have our e-learning module available that explores autistic teenage identity, and highlights the importance that understanding, acceptance and proactive support can have on our mental health.”
“When developing our new module, we recognised the need for a preventative resource that not only collaborated with, but was led by, autistic people. Everyone involved in the module development emphasised that autistic teenagers need supporters in their life to understand their autistic experience, and to recognise their autistic identity and their needs.”
Thanks to our funders, Garfield Weston Foundation, the e-learning module will be free to access throughout 2024.
