Autism East Midlands (formerly Nottinghamshire Regional Society for Adults and Children with Autism) was established in the late 1960's on the initiative of a group of parents. It is still maintained today by the parents and friends of people with autism. Autism East Midlands is based in Nottingham and exists to serve people with autism and their families in Nottinghamshire and, where appropriate, in adjacent neighbouring counties. . Its development in 1987, entirely through voluntary effort, was a natural progression in NORSACA's service provision. Parents and friends of children with autism were concerned that once a young person reached school leaving age, their progress should continue and their ongoing special needs be met. Sutherland House School is a highly specialist provision for up to 94 children and young people between 3 and 19 years, based in four separate departments: The Early Years Centre, Primary and Secondary Departments and the Continuing Education Centre. Central Services promotes the work of the Society and an awareness of autism. Autism East Midlands produces a quarterly newsletter and information updates and co-ordinates parent programmes, training and conferences.
