The name of the primary school changed in January 2012 from Abertaf Primary School to the present interim name of Abercynon Community Primary School. This change is due to the merger of 3 schools in Abercynon. We will be moving to the new build in the centre of Abercynon by September 2013, where we will be provided with a modern classroom with adjourning quiet/sensory room. Abertaf Primary Autistic Unit is a specialised class within a mainstream school in the Cynon valley. The Unit consists of up to six pupils, aged between 7-11 years with a diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and run by experienced staff: a teacher (qualified at postgraduate level in autism), an NNEB nursery nurse and LSA. The pupils follow a clear structured routine using visual aids while encouraging the use of spoken communication. Curriculum subjects are delivered in a multi-sensory, differentiated and balanced approach through topic themes while planning for individual pupils needs. Staff implement a range of approaches and strategies, eg swimming, horse riding and relaxation techniques, eg relax kids and massage in schools programme. The unit integrates with the mainstream body of the school for playtimes, dinner, assemblies, concerts, trips and where appropriate, lessons, eg RE, PE, Art, PSHE and topic work. The unit is an extremely positive and caring environment for pupils with ASD. Volunteers and students are welcome. A minibus is available for the pupils to access the community regularly.
