The infant autistic unit is attached to the mainstream school. The children in the unit have severe learning difficulties (SLD) as well as autism. In our unit we use mainly Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren (TEACCH) with signs and symbols and objects to help their communication skills. We use a combination of makaton signing, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and Derbyshire Language Scheme to encourage speech.
