Angus Independent Advocacy

Arbroath

Main information

Type of service: Advocacy (general)

Angus Independent Advocacy works with adults in Angus who may have: Learning Disabilities; Mental Illness*; Acquired Brain Injury; Dementia; Frailty in Old Age.
*We also support younger people who are subject to the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003.
What our advocates do: support in confidence; help you take control of your own life; support you when making choices that affect your life; protect your rights; help you explore options and make informed choices; help you speak to professionals; and help you prepare and accompany you to meetings.
AIA also recruits local people to become Volunteer Citizen Advocates. Citizen Advocacy is a long term partnership between two people. One is an ordinary local person who freely supports the advocacy partner. It is an equal relationship in which both the partner and the advocate benefit and learn from each other. The advocate would stand alongside their advocacy partner and support them to speak up or speak on their behalf if needed. The advocate would enable and encourage their partner to have a valued presence in their local community. Sometimes partnerships are short term as the advocacy partner may only need support during a time of crisis. In both Citizen and Crisis Advocacy it is important that the advocate is independent. This means that they are not involved with any of the services the partner uses.
