Autism Service Directory

Auticulture Network

Main information

Type of service: Local groups, Social groups, Social skills

This group has been formed by adults with an autism spectrum condition (ASC) for adults with an ASC and their partners, carers and family members who are interested in nature and in growing plants etc. We hope to use our experience to create a blueprint that may be followed by others to form similar groups in their own locale so we form a network of groups to share experiences of nature and growing. We will share growing tips, recipes, etc. and ideas for associated activities, such as photography, art and crafts. We will enjoy relaxation, the outdoors and exercise and meet personal challenges and grow as individuals as well as being gardeners.

This is not a dating agency or group and the focus will remain on creating a harmonious environment where participants can be sure of a space to relax and be respected as the person they are, so numbers and meeting times will be controlled strictly by the organiser and guests may only accompany by prior arrangement. Our sites have toilet facilities and tools are provided but please dress appropriately for weather and gardening and wear protective footwear. You are responsible for your own care such as medication and travel though personal support assistants may attend by prior arrangement - so we can manage numbers and avoid crowding. This is a place to explore and enjoy, so we ask that no prejudice should enter our space and each individual may enjoy complete respect and acceptance.

We have two sites for growing crops in Glasgow and meet by arrangement to ensure attendees are comfortable with arrangements. Social group outings on a gardening/nature theme are planned throughout the season too and members will be informed of places available. We have secured two sites in Glasgow where we plan to grow crops, flowers etc. as a way to enjoy the growing process and enjoy nature. The goal is to use skills we have and learn new skills along the way in an empathetic, supportive environment. It is organised by autistic adults for autistic adults and we manage numbers and groups to avoid surprises and ensure a calm and safe space for attendees. We aim to arrange sessions for partners, carers and family members to enjoy the same supportive benefits, fresh air, exercise and relaxation too, in a self-motivated manner. Social outings on a nature theme are planned, such as plant/tree identification walks, etc. We aim to use our experiences to create guidelines to encourage other autistic adults to consider setting up a small group local to them so we form a network. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils.

Membership is free to any adult (age 18+ years) with a formal diagnosis of an ASC or a partner, carer or family member of an adult with an ASC.
