This research centre, based at University of Birmingham and currently directed by Dr Karen Guldberg, focuses on research and teaching on education and care for individuals on the autism spectrum. Autism Centre for Education and Research (ACER) was founded by Dr Glenys Jones and Professor Rita Jordan. ACER is the home of the University of Birmingham’s Distance Learning Courses which started in 1990, as well as the e-learning University Certificate in Autism Studies (since 2000), which was set us as the result of a partnership between the university, Autism West Midlands and the Shirley Foundation. Autism studies can be followed there from undergraduate through to PhD level. ACER conducts research on educational approaches and provision. They specialise in research on Technology Enhanced Learning for children with autism. The ACER team led the content development for the Inclusion Development Programmes in autism, and the development of the Autism Education Trust's school-based programme consisting of National Standards, Competencies and Training materials.
