Main information

Type of service: Day schools, Nursery and pre-schools, Schools

At Bells Brae Primary School we believe that Additional Support Needs (ASN) encompasses provision for learners in school who may require help or specialist expertise to enable them to access as fully as possible the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) and participate in the educational opportunities therein. The aim of the ASN Department is to equip each learner with sufficient self worth, skills and confidence to learn in wider groupings where appropriate and enable them to access carefully planned time in a mainstream setting when appropriate. The local authority ASN/Management Team (MT) meeting takes place monthly and enrolment to ASN provision is considered at these meetings. The ASN Department has larger classrooms, adapted personal care facilities, a safe space, mini gym, dark room, multi sensory room, adapted pick up and drop off facility, garden and separate playground. The ASN Department takes account of all aspects of CfE. The following methodologies and resources are used: Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Boardmaker studio, Clicker 6, Non Violent Communication (NVC1), Informing and Profiling AAC Knowledge and Skills (IPAACKS), Intensive Interaction and Moving and Handling. Pupils accessing the ASN Department will have an Individual Education Plan (IEP), Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) or Co-ordinated Support Plan (CSP). Volunteers may be accepted.
