At Bright Futures School, we focus on addressing the core difficulties that lie at the heart of autism. These include problems with rigid thinking, managing uncertainty and change, social interaction and understanding and managing emotions - difficulties that are at the root of distressed (challenging) behaviour. School projects and activities involve academic learning but our first priority is to work on these core difficulties rather than just compensating for or working round them. Our approach is heavily influenced by the philosophy and practice we draw from Relationship Development Intervention (RDI)®. It is an approach that also brings a different way of working with parents and carers whom we see as equal partners. They will be supported by appropriately qualified staff so that they understand the methods used in school and are able to complement these with input to their child’s development in the family setting. The school is registered with the Department of Education (353/6015). It caters for pupils with statements of special educational needs (SEN) who have a diagnosis of autism or Asperger syndrome and are between the ages of 5 to 19 years, with our current admissions cut off at 14 years.
