A designated resourced mainstream provision for pupils with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This is a transition placement (generally for four terms) offering an intensive, autism-specific programme with good opportunities for mainstream inclusion to prepare pupils with ASD to manage when reintegrated into their local mainstream schools. Pupils in the provision receive a very high level of input from a specialist educational psychologist and speech and language therapist and detailed assessments are carried out using a range of autism-specific tests. The school uses the SPELL approach. Class 3 is the Foundation Stage and Key Stage One ASD Provision for Calderdale. The ASD Provision at Central Street Nursery and Infant School was established in 2000. We offer an intensive, autistic specific programme with opportunities for age appropriate inclusion to prepare pupils with ASD to be successful learners in mainstream education. The provision has places for 6 pupils at any one time. The classroom aims to create a structured ASD friendly teaching environment. In addition, pupils are taught using a variety of strategies and ASD approaches according to their needs and abilities for example use of Social Stories and Social Communication groups. Pupils will take part in social integration within Central Street Nursery and Infant School including lunchtimes and assemblies. Pupils will integrate into academic subjects within the school based on strengths, interests and age.
