Derbyshire First Steps Service

Derbyshire County Council

Main information

Type of service: Nursery and pre-schools

The First Steps at Home Service uses the portage model to provide home-visiting for very young children with additional support needs and their families. The service is registered with the National Portage Association. Staff work in partnership with parents to develop an individual teaching programme. Long term goals are broken down into small steps and parents are supported to teach their child. Referral is via the Local Authority's Early Years Special Educational Needs Panel. The support service for pre school children with special educational needs (SEN) can work with children aged 0-5 years who have a significant cognitive delay, or who are likely to develop this before the age of 5.
