Heaton is a special school for children aged 11 to 19 year olds with severe learning difficulties. Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups, combined with small group and individual work, sometimes with 1:1 support. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils with Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearance only and if they can commit to regular attendance. Holiday respite services are just for their own pupils. Other extra curriculum activities offered by the school are travel training and outdoor pursuits.
