Hereward College

Main information

Type of service: Further & Higher Education, Respite and short breaks

Hereward is a unique college where disabled students live and work alongside non-disabled people. The college offers academic and vocational courses as well as programmes designed to give disabled people the opportunity to develop skills for a supported independent life. Hereward welcomes students with a wide range of support needs, including those with physical disabilities, autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), sensory impairments, delicate conditions, specific learning difficulties and acquired brain injuries. This is not an exhaustive list, and the college seeks to apply its Admissions Policy on the basis of an individual assessment of a prospective student's learning and support needs. Hereward does not have special courses for students with ASD, as these students would have access to the whole of Hereward's curriculum offer. Hereward has a Social and Emotional Development Department that works closely with all students, including those with ASD on developing independence, social and living skills. The college is fully accessible to wheelchair users and has close links with its local community, giving students supported access to a wide range of additional and leisure opportunities. 24 hour nursing and enabling services, plus physiotherapy, speech therapy and conductive education are provided to meet individual needs. Hereward's ACCESS Centre identifies student's support needs, providing adapted equipment, specialist computers and educational enabling support.
