Type of service: Family support and information services

The KIDS Independent Supporters have been recruited nationwide to provide impartial support and information, throughout the process of and with applying for a new Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or transferring from a statement to an EHCP. Our Independent Supporters can work with parents of children and young people aged 0-25 or young people in further education aged up to 25. Our Independent Supporters will: Listen to you and your child/young person; Meet with you to explain the new process, find out what's working well and what you might like to work better; Help to start thinking about aspirations for your child and what's important for the future; Support during meetings; Help to make sure you and your child's views are heard and understood by all involved; Work with professionals to help gather any information relevant for the assessment; Help with any paperwork, including the draft Education, Health and Care Plan; Help parents and/or young people to understand local referral processes for services and the local offer; and Support young people who are in further education with a Learning Difficulty Assessment (LDA) transferring to an Education, Health and Care Plan. Other disabilities and conditions catered for by the service are: Asperger syndrome, high-functioning autism, autism, autism spectrum, challenging behaviour, moderate learning disabilities, profound and multiple learning disabilities, severe learning disabilities, mental health problems, hearing impairment, visual impairment and physical disability.
