Learning to Listen - mentoring programme and family summer camp

Sicklinghall

Main information

Type of service: Interventions and therapies, Play and leisure

Each week we offer children on the autism spectrum the opportunity to spend time with us around the horses. The programme is not about teaching children to ride, although this often ends up a by-product, but offers the opportunity to build a relationship with a horse and others. This programme is often accessed through a school although private lessons can be arranged. Learning opportunities include: .

  • How my actions affect others?
  • Considering others.
  • Communicating what I want.
  • Caring for and being responsible for others.
  • Raising self-awareness.
  • Raising self-esteem.
  • What I have to offer.
  • Boundaries.
  • Commitment, determination and courage.
  • Trust.
  • New situations and people.

Families are invited to join us under canvas for 3 days and two nights of fun, fun, fun. The 550 acre farm has wide open spaces, rolling hills, rivers, woods and an assortment of animals to entertain all ages. The camps don't hold a rigid structure, but activities are offered as and when you want to access them. This might include: horse handling and riding, carriage driving, painting horses, den building, fishing, walking, pond dipping, river paddling, collecting eggs, hide and seek, trampoline, bike riding, camp fire, sing a long. There will also be an opportunity for the parents to access a Learning To Listen Instructor who can coach you through some of the concepts we use with the horses. .
