Main information

Type of service: Assessment, Day schools, Outreach - education, Schools

Manchester Progressive School complies with the principles of the 1988 Education Reform Act by offering a full and balanced curriculum delivered over a 6 and a half hour school day or over 24 hours for a 52 week programme if the child is residentially accommodated. The concentration of the teaching programme is on developing relevant skills and applying them to situations throughout the pupil's day. Our curriculum is planned to promote pupil's learning via a wide range of experiences and activities including personal, social and health education opportunities, and the development of leisure, independence and mobility skills. Teachers, in conjunction with senior staff members, are responsible for devising and monitoring Individual Education and Skills Programmes for every pupil in the school. During the initial three months of a pupil's placement, short, medium and long-term targets are set in response to individual assessment. Staff meet on a fortnightly basis to monitor and review achievement. This planning and recording process not only provides teachers with a formal structure, but also supports the delivery and monitoring of the curriculum, which ensures continuity and maintenance of high standards throughout the school. The teacher is not included in this ratio. Additional staff are deployed where pupils have additional difficulties or support needs. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils only with a valid CRB check. The school uses the SPELL framework.
