Main information

Type of service: Assessment, Day schools, Nursery and pre-schools, Outreach - education, Schools

We currently have 5 classes for children who have autism - 2 Key Stage 1 (KS1) classes, including Foundation Stage, 2 KS2 classes and a mixed age class for children with sensory processing issues. The children in these classes are taught in discrete autism spectrum disorder (ASD) provision, although there are regular opportunities to integrate with other classes in school or mainstream links where relevant and beneficial. We also have some children with autism who are educated in class with their peers, and are supported by staff working in ASD through a buddy system. A large proportion of staff working in the ASD provision hold specific qualifications in Understanding Autism, Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren (TEACCH), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and positive handling strategies.
