Mont À L'Abbe is a co-educational day special school for children with learning difficulties, age range 2-18 years. The learning disabilities range from profound/multiple, to severe and moderate. Approx 20 per cent of youngsters also have autism. The majority of children are taught with their chronological age peer group, with appropriate strategies and support to meet individual needs. There is a small provision for pupils with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and challenging behaviour, who follow an individualistic programme within a very structured, predictable environment. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils within the mainstream class group. The school uses many aspects of Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) and is being adopted outside the school across all areas. There are close links with intensive support services and visiting clinical psychologist and speech and language therapists (SLTs). Some students are able to access holiday scheme provision.
