Moorcroft School T/A the Eden Academy

Hillingdon London Borough Council

Main information

Type of service: Day schools, Schools

Moorcroft is a special school and is part of a multi Academy called The Eden Academy. It is a secondary school for students aged between 11 and 19 years with severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Some of the pupils may also have additional sensory or physical impairments or challenging behaviour. At Moorcroft we aim to provide education outcomes for our students. All of our pupils have a "personalised learning programme" to help them achieve their best. This means that we adapt our curriculum to meet the needs of everyone. We also take pride in helping our young people become more independent so they can meet the many challenges in society. We have a large sensory room, and there is also a sensory integration room for pupils with sensory processing difficulties. There is a dedicated department for pupils with multi-sensory impairments. This includes a darkroom for pupils with visual impairments. The classrooms, in this department, have curtained and quiet areas, to enable pupils to participate in multi-sensory activities. Pupils with ASD have access to a learning lodge where they can work quietly and without distraction. All pupils with SLD have their own workstations and many of them follow a programme based in the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) system. Classroom have shared “quiet rooms” for individual work. All pupils are taught in small class groups with the average class size being eight pupils. Every class is staffed by a teacher and has an average of 3 qualified and experienced Teaching Assistants, depending on class size. This helps to ensure that all pupils receive an appropriate balance of whole class, small-group and individual teaching. There are two creative therapists on site, who are employed for 80% of the school week. Creative therapy is allocated according to need. There is a Speech and Language Therapist, and an Occupation Therapist, who works 4 days per week. The Occupational Therapist supports pupils with physical and sensory needs. We also offer Rebound Therapy, delivered by trained staff. Physiotherapists from the Hillingdon Child Development team visit the school twice weekly. They implement programmes that are then carried out by classroom staff. We have an educational psychologist who visits the school regularly to support with pupils who are struggling to achieve their best. The class teacher will ensure that all staff that work with your child enjoy a relationship with them and staff will meet regularly to ensure that they are using consistent and effective approaches at all times in their interactions with your child. If a child's needs are deemed to be exceptional even within our special school setting the School Leadership Team will ensure that further support is available to them.
