Type of service: Interventions and therapies, Outreach

MusicSpace (the MusicSpace Trust Reg Charity No. 328311), provides a community-based music therapy service for children and adults at our centres in Bristol and Gloucester and within the wider community. A team of 14 state-registered music therapists is currently working with over 450 clients per week using music in a specific way to develop communication, encourage interaction and self-esteem. The organisation provides individual and group music therapy sessions, and offers assessments, short-term work or longer-term intervention as appropriate. Children and adults come to the centres for weekly sessions. It also provides an outreach service for those people who are unable to travel. We are currently working in assessment units, pre-school centres, special schools, day centres and residential homes in the region in addition to the local Children's Hospital and hospice. It also provides training on the use of music with special needs children. A large number of clients (about a quarter) are on the autistic spectrum and these range from pre-school aged children through to adults. Music therapy can be of particular benefit here as it encourages self-expression and communication between client and therapist through a non-verbal medium.Through playing music together, skills such as listening, concentration and making eye-contact can be acquired within a safe environment.
