North Berwick High School

East Lothian Council

Main information

Type of service: Day schools, Schools

The name of the unit for children with special needs is called the Support For Pupils unit. Pupils with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are educated according to their individual needs and these are reassessed with regular review meetings approximately 3 a year. They may be extracted for part of their timetable to work in the pupil support bases or they may be supported in mainstream classes or they may have a combination of both. Sometimes support tails off as they progress through the school, again, according to their needs and abilities. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. The school uses the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework.
