Oaklands is a local authority special school for pupils with learning difficulties. We have a growing department for pupils whose learning is affected by autism. We provide highly individualised education delivered in small groups with a high staff pupil ratio. We can provide speech and language, occupational, play and music therapies. We use a wide range of autism specific strategies including Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Intensive Interaction and sensory integration. A limited number of volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. The teacher-pupil with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ratio is as appropriate to student need. We celebrate main festivals of all religions represented in our student population.
