The school is for children with severe learning difficulties aged from 2 to 11 years. There are places for children with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) and severe learning difficulties (SLD). Also on site is Barnet Early Years Centre - comprising the Acorn Assessment Centre and the Preschool Teaching Service. The school runs an Earlybird scheme for parents of preschool children with ASC. There are inclusion opportunities at playtime, lunchtime, assemblies and in planned programmes. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. Some pupils are educated in ASC-specific classes, others are in mixed groups, depending on need. The number of children with ASC and SLD is not fixed as we take pupils without a diagnosis too. The overriding difficulty would be severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. We adopt a range of approaches including Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Transactional Support (SCERTS), makaton, Little Group, Intensive Interaction and Sensory Processing Programmes. Short breaks are just for their own pupils.
