The Pennyhooks Project is a facility for young people with autism to learn rural skills on an organic farm. The project, co-ordinated by a special needs teacher and probation service officer, involves an accredited Open Colleges Network course which allows students to take part in farm life. Work can involve feeding and bedding up cows, moving willow logs and electric fencing and planting trees. There are also donkeys, goats, hens and pigs to care for. The longer term aim through the training at Pennyhooks is to help equip the autistic youngsters for worthwhile adult lives. There is room for 50 people per week who are funded by social services, local education authorities and charitable donations. All types of referral are accepted. Volunteers may also be accepted to work with service users.
