Penrose School

Somerset County Council

Main information

Type of service: Day schools, Schools

All pupils in the school have a statement of special needs, which is a multi-disciplinary document with input from parents, education, medical officer, psychologist, speech therapist and physiotherapist as appropriate. Pupils statement documents are up dated annually with input from parents and all agencies involved in a pupils life. A decision on the appropriate school placement is made at County Hall where all the documents are collated. All pupils follow programmes related to the national curriculum, our aim is to provide the pupils that attend school with a broad balanced and differentiated curriculum, providing pupils with many relevant experiences within school, in the local community, and within the south west of the country. All pupils also have a programme to develop their communication skills. To meet the diverse needs of our pupils we also offer a sensory related curriculum concentrating on key areas of early development. On leaving school the pupils transfer to Further Education Colleges and/or adult training centres, the latter run by social services rather than education. Good contact between parents and school is essential. Penrose School has an active parents forum. Parents are able to visit the school regularly. Links have been forged between voluntary organisations and the school. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils.
