Riverside School caters for pupils aged 5-16 years with moderate learning difficulties (MLD) and other complex needs. In recent years pupils have been admitted who present with more challenging and significant learning needs, including an increasing number of pupils with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We aim to develop lively, enquiring minds by providing a stimulating, enjoyable learning environment and a broad, balanced, relevant curriculum. Pupils are organised broadly into class groups based on age but which also take into account the needs of individual pupils. Class groups are a maximum of 12 pupils supported by 2 to 3 teaching assistants, each class having a named form tutor. The primary aged children are taught mostly on a “class” basis, whilst the secondary phase pupils are taught on a specialist subject teacher, secondary school model. Pupils will be taught in their whole class group or in smaller groups and/or as individuals when this is appropriate. The school does not have a specialist unit for pupils with ASD, all pupils being taught within their allocated class group. Pupils with ASD may receive additional support as assessed is required at any time. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. The school uses many aspects of good practice that are included within the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) approach.
