Main information

Type of service: Day schools, Nursery and pre-schools, Outreach - education, Schools

The children in the Autistic Base spend most of their time in small groups with other children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Wherever possible, ASD pupils will have opportunities to integrate in the attached primary. This integration can be social, physical and/or educational. The school operates a Buddy system whereby a mainstream P6 or P7 pupil will help children in the Base at playtime and lunchtime. We also encourage mainstream children to interact with ASD pupils in the Base and in the playground. The Base has a therapy room and a multi-sensory room. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. We use the environs of the school extensively. The school uses the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework.
