Main information

Type of service: Further & Higher Education

Royal College Manchester offers day and residential courses to students aged between 19-25 years with a broad range of communication difficulties including hearing impairment, limited or no oral language communication and severe/complex learning difficulties.

We have excellent on site facilities and specialist support that support access to learning on/off site. We offer a personalised curriculum to each student based on their needs and interests, the extended curriculum is supported by embedded therapy to maximise opportunities for learning across the college week, evenings, weekends and in even the college holidays.

The curriculum is underpinned by the use of specialist teaching strategies including intensive interaction, TEACCH, sensory integration, systematic instruction etc. that facilitate participation of all students in learning. The curriculum aims to support the development of independence, life skills, communication and self-advocacy.

Specialist teaching facilities include a fully inclusive Karten centre; accessible life skills room, dark room, sensory room, quiet place and individual work rooms. Each teaching base is designed to effectively support group and individual work stations. The acoustic and visual environment has been designed to be comfortable for learners who experience hypo/hypersensitivity to sound and vision.

There are specialist facilities on campus including sports hall, an inclusive fitness suite, swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, horticulture workshop, gamelan and dance studio. Students also make great use of the local community.
