The unit for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the Sunflower class. St George's is a school for students with severe or complex needs aged 11-19 years. Students are educated in their year groups where possible but this is dependent on need. Students with an ASD are usually included in their own peer group unless their needs cannot be met within that class. If students require Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren (TEACCH) as a way of supporting their needs this can be set up in their own class. Students who require a higher level of support and structure can be taught in a small unit specifically for ASD students. A highly structured timetable is used in the Sunflower class. Students focus on developing their communication through use of picture exchange communication system (PECS), makaton, Prox Talker and develop social and life skills. Staff within the class are trained to work specifically with ASD students and understand the need to manage sensory issues as well as working with the students to help them become more independent. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils alongside school staff. Department H extended schools works alongside volunteers. Students are directed to St George's via the local authority (LA) through their statement. All facilities offered by the school are within the context of a school for pupils with severe and complex needs. Students have access to some swimming. Volunteers may be accepted.
