St Julian's is an 11-18 years comprehensive school. Any pupils with additional needs are cared for by the Learning Support Department. Pupils with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are taught in mainstream classes. Teaching Assistant (TA) support is provided for some lessons and is usually dependent on statement requirements / needs identified by the school. Withdrawal support is also available. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. These are usually short term placements for volunteers to gain experience and are subject to criminal records bureau (CRB) check. Newport's Learning Development Centre (LDC) is part of St Julian's (this is the 'unit within mainstream'.) 61 statemented students are in the LDC all with moderate learning disabilities (MLD).
