The Gateway Award is an activity award which people with a learning disability of any age or ability can take part in. The award encourages people to gain new skills and experiences, become more independent, make friends, be active in the community and to have better health and wellbeing. .

There are three levels of the award; bronze, silver and gold. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of each stage. At each level participants must complete five different activities. Activities are based on people's individual abilities and needs, each participant will work with their supporter to decide on activities. Activities can be completed at the award centre or in the participant's own time. Activities are grouped into five sections which can be completed in any order and/or simultaneously: Hobbies, Lifestyle, Fitness, Volunteering and the Gateway Challenge! .
