Main information

Type of service: Day schools, Outreach - education, Schools

The Holmewood School, London is a warm and friendly school for autistic young people of all genders aged 7-19 who are working with average or above average cognitive abilities. In addition, many of our students will have other other language, communication and social pragmatic difficulties. Our philosophy is founded on a desire to make a difference and to challenge the way all members of our community think about autism. At Holmewood, we ensure our young people get every opportunity to achieve their full potential in life, irrespective of any difficulties. This commitment is an intrinsic part of our philosophy. It is at the heart of everything we work towards.
Our aim is to enable every young person to flourish by encouraging and building upon their unique strengths and interests. Students are supported to develop and deploy strategies that overcome and cope with their difficulties. We recognise that every student is different, and the individual hopes, dreams and ambitions of each young person are our starting point. In addition to academic achievement, the focus at Holmewood is on developing the social, emotional and personal skills of each student. This is supported by ensuring that we strengthen their independent living skills and teach them to advocate for themselves, which in turn lead to greater confidence and self-esteem.
Children are grouped in chronological age as far as possible but great consideration is given to social communication needs as well as sensory & behavioural compatibility. Classes are small (typically 4-8) and taught by specialist teachers. Full therapy services (including occupational therapy (OT), speech and language therapy (SaLT), drama therapy, music therapy, psychotherapy & reflexology) are available and are an integral part of the school day.
