The Kingfisher Community Special School

Main information

Type of service: Day schools, Nursery and pre-schools, Schools

The Kingfisher Community Special School is Oldham's primary special school for children with severe and complex needs. We have a total communication environment and clearly defined organisational structure that supports specific learning needs and we have re-designed our curriculum around the needs of the children rather than trying to 'fit' them to an existing format. The curriculum is now skills-based and follows a thematic approach. The learning environment is also being remodelled to ensure that each child has appropriate access and facilities to enable their needs to be met. The school is also committed to working in partnership with the Child Support Agency (CSA), through the development of the Primary Intervention Project (PIP), which supports mainstream primary schools in building capacity in relation to specific special educational needs (SEN) needs. Another facility offered by the school is appropriate learning environments. Other interventions offered by the school are the total communication approach and multi-agency working.
