The Pines Special School is a primary special school with a nursery class which educates pupils who experience communication delays and disorders mainly autism. It is located on the same campus as a mainstream primary school, which provides opportunities for inclusion. Some pupils present challenging behaviours, a number of which are severe. All children experience learning difficulties or delays. All children have access to the National Curriculum and the school is biased towards the acquisition of language and communication skills to enable this to occur. Where appropriate children are integrated into mainstream schools so they may be included in their local community. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils subject to safeguarding checks.
