The Westminster School is a Local Authority (LA) funded moderate learning disability (MLD) school. It caters for pupils with a range of needs including additional communication difficulties, autism, visual impairment, hearing impairment and speech and language difficulties. The school is committed to raising standards with pupils working towards educational and social inclusion in partnership with the community to develop as a Centre of Excellence promoting the highest expectations whilst meeting individual needs. The approach to learning across the school is to embed structure, model positive approaches and challenge expectations. Interventions such as Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communications handicapped Children (TEACCH) are used as appropriate (the primary aim of the TEACCH Programme is to help prepare people with autism to live or work more effectively at home, at school and in the community; special emphasis is place on helping people with autism and their families to live together more effectively by reducing or removing 'autistic behaviours'), sensory regulation, Framework for Intervention (benchmark programme) and Positive Behaviour Strategies. Pupils are educated in groups with others with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and in mixed groups. The school is a member of the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD) and it is currently working towards Autism Accreditation.
